The story behind Orlando Artist Bob Smedley

Bob Smedley is an Orlando mixed media artist. While sitting in his studio at the Faith Arts Village Orlando (FAVO) he shared his story on Episode 94 of Artistic Spot.

Although being a mixed media artist is relatively new to him, Bob has had a deep connection with painting and local entertainment for more than 30 years.

“Singing in the church was a big part of me.” Bob said. Back in the year 1990, the Orlando Gay Chorus was founded. He was the second president, and although it was challenging, and the chorus experienced financial discrimination from the United Arts of Central Florida leader based on religion, he is happy to see where it is nowadays. “Music bridges people, and it brings people together.” Bob said.

Bob is currently one of the resident artists and has a beautiful studio gallery at FAVO. He uses paper, card stock, tissue paper, magazines, flyers he gets in the mail. The gallery features magnificent art pieces mostly made of paper with no “specific intent.” Bob said.

One of the most important details to take into consideration in the world of art is how it resonates with people. “The piece becomes something to someone.” said Bob.

There is more to Bob than being a mixed media visual artist. He used to own a cake business. Bob worked in Orange County as a Supervisor of domestic violence offenders for 39 years. Being a mixed media artist seems to be the perfect retirement career for Bob, a heart attack survivor, and who is also turning 65 this September.

“I think this is going to be a long-term process for me.” “This creative process is such a big part of me.” Bob said.

Bob is happy to have shared his story with Artistic Spot. This episode of the show is now available everywhere podcasts are found. Follow Bob Smedley on Instagram: @bob.smedleyartworks and on Facebook: Bob Smedley. In Artistic Spot, where you are also the artist.
