Directed by Nia DaCosta (‘Little Wood’, and the upcoming ‘Captain Marvel 2’), “Candyman” brings back an urban legend story in an art-world setting in Chicago, Illinois with the use of the fantastic “Shadow Play,” an ancient technique of storytelling that uses “shadow puppets.”
The film also represents the world of visual arts and the importance of storytelling through paintings, and how artists paint from a place within based on their experiences and what they have inside.
The movie features a cast lead by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart Jarrett, Colman Domingo. A horror movie that is relevant in today’s culture, highlighting the importance of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, and the black presence in horror films.
In addition to the film’s outstanding social message, Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and their partnerships, have focused on serving as a platform to showcase the artistry and the talent of six students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). These students were carefully selected through a partnership with HBCU Buzz.
