‘Candyman’ A Brilliant Horror Movie Sequel with an Important Social Message Told through Art

Universal Pictures / YouTube

Directed by Nia DaCosta (‘Little Wood’, and the upcoming ‘Captain Marvel 2’), “Candyman” brings back an urban legend story in an art-world setting in Chicago, Illinois with the use of the fantastic “Shadow Play,” an ancient technique of storytelling that uses “shadow puppets.”

The film also represents the world of visual arts and the importance of storytelling through paintings, and how artists paint from a place within based on their experiences and what they have inside.

The movie features a cast lead by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart Jarrett, Colman Domingo. A horror movie that is relevant in today’s culture, highlighting the importance of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, and the black presence in horror films.

In addition to the film’s outstanding social message, Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and their partnerships, have focused on serving as a platform to showcase the artistry and the talent of six students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). These students were carefully selected through a partnership with HBCU Buzz.

Medium: Oil on canvas

April Lacey, Chloe Williams, Donielle PankeyHaley Wilson, Ja’Marcus Willis, and Kendall Robinson were the lucky artists selected from different Colleges and Universities around the country.

These artists, will showcase their art pieces that were inspired by the film in different Colleges and Universities in the U.S.

Outstanding photography, a great script, along the use of artistic elements, the film promises to be one of the most important, and the best horror film of the year. A brilliantly made movie. A great sequel that is worth the wait.

“Candyman,” the sequel to the 1992 film with the same name, will be released in theaters nationwide after being pushed back a couple of times amid concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is finally making its way to the big screen on August 27th, 2021.
